Flame Wow Private Server

Are Blizzard World of Warcraft patches hidden on Vista computers?

I play World of Warcraft on Retail servers, but recently an old flame rekindled and I decided that I would like to play on a private server once more. I can't back patch to 2.4.3 when I have a 3.0.X client installed, so the only way for me to back patch would be to reinstall. That is fine, but I would also like to continue playing retail WoW, so I need to have two separate versions of WoW installed on my computer. That part I can do easily, but I REALLY don't want to reinstall the near 3 gig patches to update from 2.4.3 to 3.0.X so I can continue playing retail as well as private. So, down to the point. On a Windows XP computer, the patches are all in the World of Warcraft folder for easy access, but I can't seem to find them on Vista. Do I need to configure my computer to be able to see hidden files in order to see the patches on a Vista computer?

In Windows Vista, it is possible to save the patch fiels in three different locations:

1. The World of Warcraft folder if you run the game explicitly as an administrator.

This one obviously is not working for you.

2. The VirtualStore folder. You can access this by clicking the Compatibility Files button while inside the World of Warcraft folder. This only appears if your computer has UAC turned on and that there are files in the VirtualStore folder.

Check this one.

3. C:UsersPublicDocumentsBlizzard EntertainmentWorld of Warcraft

It is most likely in this one.

The patch files MUST be in one of these 3 places. There is no other option that WoW has to place the patch files anywhere else.

This means that if you can't find the patch files in any of these 3 places, you are doing something wrong or not looking correctly or something.

WoW private server question?

First of all, can you please not flame me by saying "Private Servers are Illegal blah blah blah." Thats not my question. Anyways, when im reading through the connection guide of various wow private server sites, it says to go to to your wow folder under program files. Does this mean that I have to have the actual disk installed on my computer? Help? Thanks

You must have world of warcraft installed on your computer and patched to the level the private server requires.

Then you go into the program files and edit the realmlist.

Hope this helps ;)
