Improving World Of Warcraft Gameplay With Minimap Add-Ons

I love the minimap in World of Warcraft as much as anyone - but it's just that, a map. It doesn't have any special features, nothing to enhance playing.

Never fear! Minimap add-ons for World of Warcraft will enhance your minimap, and your playing, helping you navigate better, and even enjoy the game more.

What Are Add-Ons?

An add-on is something that 'mods', or modifies, a game to enhance your gaming experience. There are tons of add-ons out today, doing an enormous amount of different things, and Blizzard completely allows it.

Don't mis-read this, though - an add-on isn't a cheat. It won't make you stronger, it won't allow you to be invincible, and it certainly won't let you get extra gold. The Horde can't talk to the Alliance, and vise versa. But add-ons can tell you how badly you need your equipment repaired; they can give you more action bars, and make playing easier and more fun.

Blizzard allows this - however, according to the Exploitation and Client/Server Manipulation Policy, if you give yourself an unfair advantage, such as getting access to information no one else has, or allowing teleportation, your account will be either suspended, or cancelled entirely.

Add-ons can be made using a tool that Blizzard supplies or pre-made add-ons can be found on many websites online. To make an add-on, you need at least basic knowledge of Lua or XML. The ones I'm going to talk about now are pre-made add-ons found online, but feel free to make something similar using Blizzard's tool.

Minimap Me Baby!

Here are a few different add-ons that you can find on almost any add-on website for WoW. A few are good, a few are great, and a couple are just plain silly.

BigMiniMap

The big minimap allows you to toggle between two minimap sizes, instead of just one. You bind a hotkey to it so you can have the option at just a click of a button. It's great when you're completely lost and have no idea where you are, and only a very vague idea of where you're going.

CornerMiniMap

This one doesn't do much to actually help you, but it makes the overall appearance of the screen visually attractive. You can change the shape of the minimap, allowing for rounder edges. It's really nice if you're a stickler for style.

GuildMap

The Guild Map is quite possible one of the greatest add-ons for a player who is active in their guild. Members of your guild will show up on both the minimap and the world map, making it easier to locate friends and acquaintances. If you're like the rest of us and tired of searching for someone in a sea of NPC's and PC's, this is the add-on for you.

MiniMapAutoHide

The name pretty much explains this add-on, but for those who don't get it, I'll explain. This is actually a really cool add-on, and a lot of players use it. You can hide the minimap and bring it back to the screen at will, so when ever you're tired of dealing with it, or feel it's just in the way, you have the option to get rid of it.

MinimapButtonHider

You know those annoying buttons on the minimap? They just seem to get in the way, huh? Well, this add-on appreciates that fact, and gives you a great option - you can hide those pesky buttons at will. Really, when ever you'd like!

There's so much more you can do with your minimap, and even your world map, that you probably never thought was possible. The use of add-ons really makes the game feel more like your game, and less like just another video game.

The first problems you're going to encounter, and the natural starting place for this guide, is the process of server, faction, race, class and name selection.

There are several server types in World of Warcraft. PvE servers focus on combat between the player and the environment. You complete your quests, and run around generally free of harm from the opposing faction. PvP servers, while still focusing on questing and leveling, allow players to attack other players at will. Some find this a game-defining feature, and can't imagine play without it, others consider it a needless annoyance. There also exist Role Playing (RP) versions of each server type. RP servers have additional requirements. The most important difference is that you must remain 'in-character' when interacting with others. You are truly diving into the WORLD of Warcraft on these servers, immersing yourself in the content. As with PvP servers, some players find the idea of Role Playing beyond what they want from the game, and RP servers tend to be somewhat lower-population.

After choosing your server, you must choose which faction, or side, you wish to take. Those familiar with the Warcraftseries of games will recognize the two sides, Alliance and Horde, and may already have a preference. For those new to the entire Warcraft universe you may wish to do some background reading, as Blizzard and its writers have create an in-depth storyline through their game-making history. Both sides have identical race and class availability.

Now you must choose your class. The class you play, especially if you play it all the way to the maximum level (now level 80) will be the single biggest game-defining choice that you make. Playing additional characters (also known as rerolling) up to maximum level takes some doing (though not as much as it used to). Certain classes, such as paladins or druids, can, depending on your gear and the talents you choose (more about that later!) play all three roles: damage dealing (DPS), healing and tanking (bearing the brunt of attacks while your group members do the damage and the healing). Other classes, such as the hunter or mage, specialize in different ways of doing damage, but do not have access to the other roles. Choose your class carefully!

Finally, you must choose a name. Names can be changed, but only once every six months, and it costs 25 USD. Choose something from fantasy; choose your own name, or a variant, if it's available. Choosing anything you want. Just be sure you want to be known by that, or any of its possible short forms, for the duration of your stay in World of Warcraft.

You are now ready to enter the world, and being your quest to level up, gather gear, make money and meet new people. You will enter in your race's starting zone; some races share their zones with others. This area gives you a chance to familiarize yourself with the game, its controls and with the basics of your character. NPCs with yellow question marks over your head (also shown as question marks on your mini-map, the tiny round map in the top-right corner of your screen) have quests, or tasks, for you to perform. Right click on any such NPC, and they will tell you what you need to do. Pay careful attention to the quest instructions, as the typically contain valuable clues to the location of the quest.

As you head out on your first batch of quests you'll need to learn how to kill things. Every character comes with 2 or 3 useful spells at level 1. The computer automatically loads them into your 'action bar', and assigns them to the first few keys on the row of numbers above the function (F) keys. Click on a monster (also known as a mob) to target it, and press the button associated with the damage spell you wish to use. As soon as you attack the monster, it will come at you, and do the same. Continue attacking the monster with your spells; you must also learn how to use your weapon to attack. The game puts this on the '1' key to start with. Pressing that key will cause your character to swing his or her weapon. Your character will continue to swing at any opportunity until you press 1 again to turn it off, the monster dies, or you de-target the monster. Once you have killed your target, right click on its corpse to 'loot' it, that is, to take any currency and items it had.
